Bible Verses About Backbiting And Gossiping

In Jesus, we have joined in one body and now we are walking in spirit to achieve our goal to attain everlasting life. Though we have determined to follow Jesus in our daily life, yet sinful nature is existing in us which always forces us to work against the will of God.

Backbiting and gossiping are the direct effect of our sinful nature which we inherited from Adam and Eve. Here, we need to be wise in order to have fellowship with the Lord.

Speaking evil against our brothers and sisters to others causes many negative effects in our relationship with them as well as with the Lord. Most of the time we tend to speak unnecessary words about others which brings divisions in our unity too.

A Man Of God Needs To Control His Tongue

The Lord has called us for a greater purpose where we are to bring many people into salvation. Remembering the call, we are to obey the word of God to fulfil his plan.

The believers are the bearer of Jesus through their words and works. They should control their tongue before people and wisely behave with everyone.

God has assigned his faithful believers to speak about him to the people who are still walking in darkness. So they must be well known to use their tongue.

James 1:26 “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth, not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.”

2 Corinthians 12:20For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults”

Romans 1:29-30 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,”

Ephesians 4:29 “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

Exodus 23:1 “Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.”

1 Peter 2:12 “Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.”

Colossians 3:8 “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.rify God in the day of visitation.”

Speaking Against Brother Brings Division

Speaking any useless words can cause division among fellow members. God has given us the wisdom to speak about our brothers and sisters. We need to know that our words have an importance that can separate new members from their faith. And God will judge us according to what we are speaking here to others.

Unnecessary words must be removed from us and we should give special attention to what we spark about our brothers who came to Christ to start their journey towards salvation.

Psalm 50:20 “Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother’s son.”

James 4:11 “Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.”

Proverbs 16:28 “A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.”

Proverbs 17:9 “He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.”

Proverbs 26:20 “Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.”

Jeremiah 9:4 “Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders.”

Backbiting And Gossiping Leads To Destruction

Once we were dead in our sins but now the Lord has opened our spiritual eyes to see the truth. Now we are no longer walking according to the instruction of the old man who was corrupted in sins.

Every day we should evaluate ourselves whether we are keeping God’s words or not. Speaking evil of our brothers is not a good job at all. We are to build the relationship among us by speaking the positive words of our brothers and sisters.

Negative words come from Satan who is always trying his best to destroy the children of God so we are asked to be wise while we talk about others.

Romans 1:28-30And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,”

Proverbs 13:3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.”

Proverbs 25:23The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.”

Proverbs 10:18He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.”

Backbiters Will Not Inherit The Kingdom Of God

To enter into God’s kingdom one must obey what the Lord says. None will have any chance to get inside god’s kingdom by living a life that is not desired by God.

Backbiters will have to face eternal punishment due to their disobedience. As the Lord is holy and he speaks to his children to change their way of living by following his righteousness.

Psalm 15:1-3Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.”

1 Peter 3:16Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.”

Psalm 15:3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.”

Ephesians 4:31Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice”

Revelation 21:8But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Women Must Stay Away From Backbiting

Most of the women have the tendency to speak about others without knowing their real situation. In that case, they become guilty in the sight of God. women are made by the wonderful hand of God and they were created to help the man.

their role is to help their husbands in their families, apart from that they are assigned to extend the kingdom of God by living a Christ-centered life by speaking the word of God to others.

1 Timothy 3:11Even so, must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.”

1 Timothy 5:13And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.”

Believers Should Always Keep Distance From backbiters

God’s word guides us to have the knowledge by which we can understand what is right and what is wrong. Here, we are commanded to avoid such people who keep on backbiting others. We need to remember that one who speaks against others behind their back so it is evident that the guy would definitely speak against us in our absence.

Believers should not keep any intimacy with such people who are not worthy to follow God’s guidelines in their lives. As the scripture warns us to leave the company of those people so we need to take it seriously to be saved from God’s wrath which will come in the great day of the judgment.

Leviticus 19:16 Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour; I am the Lord.”

Proverbs 11:13A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.”

Proverbs 20:19He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.”

Psalm 34:13Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile”
